Having A Bad Day?

Have you ever had a rotten case of the Mondays?

Everybody gets them from time to time.

Maybe your day started off with you spilling coffee on your new shirt.

Or maybe you didn’t wake up to your alarm.

Did you hit traffic that you didn’t account for?

Forget to pack a healthy lunch for the road?

Get an email from an unhappy client?

Sometimes it doesn’t take much to knock us down, but we don’t have to stay there.

Some days just feel rougher than others from the start. But even if your day starts off a little rocky, it’s important to remember that it doesn’t have to carry on that way.

Whatever it is that started your day off on the wrong foot, it doesn’t have to set the tone for your entire day. You can choose to change your attitude.

“If you don’t like something, change it. If you can’t change it, change your attitude.”

-Maya Angelou

When you find yourself in a bad mood, take a deep breath and think about it for a minute.

Is this bad day really “happening to you?” Or do you have control over it?

Is it really that the day and everyone and everything in it is out to see you fail?

Is the day really as bad as it seems, or are you just unable to see past it?

Because it will eventually be over, and you might even forget the reason you were upset in the first place.

Whenever I’m having a really bad day, I always remind myself that it WILL pass.

Whatever is bringing me down will eventually be in the past. Three days from now, I probably won’t remember how I was feeling or why – so why should I let it ruin my entire day?

If I’m disappointed, I will get over it.

If I make a mistake, I will correct it.

This temporary feeling of defeat or frustration or anger about whatever happened today or yesterday will go away, as long as I let it.

Sure, you could continue to let one or two bad circumstances take over your thoughts for the day. But wouldn’t you rather get back to enjoying life and moving past whatever it is that is keeping you from achieving your goals and living your dreams? That certainly sounds like a more productive approach.

So, next time you wake up in a foul mood, ready to blame anything other than yourself for how you feel, I challenge you to pause for a moment and think. Why am I in this situation? Can I do anything to fix it?

If so, do it. If not, move on to the next thing on your to-do list, and let the bad feelings fade, because they will, if you let them.

Tomorrow is a new day, full of opportunity. Think about that instead.
